The organization was initiated in Kerala, in 1920, and was aimed at the spiritual progress of women. The founders named it "Mort Maryam Samajam" after St. Mary the Blessed Theothokos, whom they depend on as their interceding saint. It was started under the patronage of the Late Very Rev. M.C.Kuriakose Ramban and with the leadership of K.M Annamma. and co-workers. August 15 is observed as the Samjam Day. The slogan is “Pray, Act and Shine”
All Church ladies over the age of 16 are members of the Marth Mariam Samajam. The group comes together for study, prayer and fellowship. At present bi-weekly prayer meetings are organized on Friday and these are coordinated by the Samajam.
